Yesterday, I sold my season tickets for the pre-season game against the Broncos scheduled for Saturday night to a young man from Battle Ground, Washington. He was taking his 12 year old daughter to her first Hawks game because “she loves watching them on television”. Dad had only been to one Hawk’s game his entire life. It was against the Atlanta Falcons back when Michael Vick was their quarterback.
Dad asked me the name of the player pictured on the ticket. I told him it was Zach Miller (#86) and he was our tight end. I could tell that dad and his daughter probably had recently started rooting for the Hawks. He loved watching Marshawn Lynch (#24) run the ball because Lynch is so hard to tackle. I asked him if he had seen the BeastQuake run. He didn’t know about the Beast Quake run! Needless to say, I gave him a detailed explanation of the seismic event and told him to YouTube it. I also told him to watch Rain City Redemption to fully understand the point in time we find ourselves in as Seahawks fans. If you haven’t seen the video yet, do it now!
I saw this as an opportunity to help a newbie 12, so I took the time and gave him pointers on attending a game at Seahawks Stadium with a 12 year old girl. He was grateful for the advice. He was excited to create an awesome memory with his daughter. We shook hands and went our own ways.
As I was driving home, I started thinking about when I was 13 years old and attended my first Hawks game. I know that come Saturday night after the game is over, a 12 year old girl from Battle Ground, Washington will be a 12 for life.
